[FP] The reasons I'm going to use projectors

1) Understanding the media concept of projection mapping, by Yiyun Kang's PhD dissertation, <The Spatiality of projection mapping: A practice-based research on projected moving-image installation> 

Projection mapping generates a distinctive relationship between screen, moving image, and space, by reconfiguring through the notions of surface and depth (p.10)

In contrasts, projection mapping is essentially incorporated within a space or object and cannot be archived in its original version; once de-installed from the exhibition venue, the artwork disappears. For this reason, projection mapping lacks the durability of art practices such as film and painting, and aligns more with live performance art in terms of transience, because performace's ephemerality provides it with an identity that separates it from other art disciplines; performance is identified through live actions in space and time before a live audience. In this view, projection mapping is also a temporal live-event that 'cannot endure itself outside of the temporal-spatial zone it unfolds in before an audience'. (p.29-30)

Distinctively, projection mapping not only produces the replica of the 'taken place', but also transforms it through the superimposed moving images to add narratives onto the space. (p.66)

2) My Final Project temporal-spatial zone

2-1) Exam

When: 2nd December 

Space: Classroom in Whitecity, but there is no installation.

2-2)Exhibition

When: Around February 20, but this time is the middle of the spring term for 2-year students, which are very common.

Space: Indeterminate RCA South Kensington campus. Space will be the style of a gallery, by giving each student limited space.

 

Projection mapping will be placed on indeterminate spaces. Also, I cannot setup a projector on the ceiling in Whitecity campus. Hence I've decided that my work has a style of artwork in a gallery, by setting up projectors in eye-level. Not only the reason of the limitation and unknowing temporal-spatial zone but also, above all, the reason why I put the projector at the eye-level is that it matches the intention of the work.
